I'm not pressuring my son to become a lawyer, I just saw this pattern for a barrister's wig, and thought it might make a cute Halloween costume. I used the technique from the pattern to create the curls, but I free-handed the rest. I've also made a barrister's robe out of a black t-shirt and detailed with ribbon, but ReRe wouldn't put it on for the picture. Thank goodness the wig fits him, and stays on his head like velcro (afro + chenille = super friction). I'll try to get pics tomorrow night and post them, but thought I'd post this now in case it doesn't come together.
All these spiders and cobwebs around have kept this song in my head all week - time to plague you with the Ohrwurm that has infested my head:
It's been a very busy week, so I haven't been able to post about our Halloween preparations, so I'll just put it all in one post. The most important one: ReRe in costume:
The overalls are handmade by a good friend, who will be receiving, in exchange, some knit jeans for her baby-on-the-way (this way they are guaranteed to be finished before the baby grows out of them!). I got the shirt at a second-hand store, and sewed short threads of straw-coloured yarn onto the cuffs. There was a straw hat to match, but ReRe was rather insistent about his khaki cap.
We had a little get together with a few friends on Sunday to have a Halloween party for the kids, but unfortunately the batteries in my camera died, so I have no pics to show for it. I do, however, have a pic of the rice krispie pumpkins I made, with apologies for the bad lighting. I put some orange-coloured sugar in with the marshmallows as I melted them, and they turned the marshmallow goo a rather bright shade of orange. I then dipped the tops in green-coloured sugar. Lots of sugary goodness.
I also tried my hand at a Halloween craft - little cheesecloth-mache ghosts. I had gone to Michael's to get some Halloween decorations, and was mildly appalled by the scale, disposability and tackiness of most of what I saw, and so decided to try to make some decorations at home. I checked out a few sites, including Martha Stewart's Halloween craft site, and found a surprisingly easy project for these little ghosts. The only changes I made were that I used whole pieces of cheesecloth, which I think draped better, and used a very thin flour and water and salt mixture rather than the liquid starch. Here are some pics of the steps leading up, and the final product:
So all in all we had a pretty good Halloween, and I got my crafting fix. I should last me at least until the first of December.
My mom got her wish - I dressed up as Cher and swung my hair as best I could to fundraise for UNICEF during this morning's rush hour in downtown Toronto. Here's another shot of me working it:
We had a lot of fun, and got a pretty good reaction - at least one or two people from each train gave us some coins, and a few people dropped some bills. Most people gave loonies and twoonies, so I think we did quite well. One woman stopped to help adjust my wig, since she said it was a bit of a mess in the back. Love it!
With a last minute cash infusion from a dear friend, I have reached my personal Dare-to-Wear goal of raising $200 for UNICEF, and will now be required to wear a costume of my largest donor's choice while collecting donations for UNICEF at the Dundas Subway Station tomorrow morning from 7-9am. Yes, my mom got to choose my costume, and it's not the clown or hobo costumes of my youth, it is something completely different, but I won't ruin the surprise. This one will require me to visit a few costume rental shops around town, so hopefully no one else in Mississauga wants to be this person for Halloween. If I'm unable to secure this costume, I think the Crazy Cat Lady will make an appearance, she's getting a lot of positive support. Or my friends and family would indeed pay good money to see me make a fool of myself on the subway. Anything for charity, eh?
Wow, the generosity of my peeps is astounding. I am now only $10 away from my double-dare goal of reaching $200 for UNICEF!! Junkii, are you listening?? You could put me over the edge!!
The way things are right now, my mom is going to get to pick my costume...people, help me, or she'll make me be a clown for the umpteenth time! Or a hobo, I don't get it. What was with the clowns and hobos, mom?! Was this a way of facing your fear of things to come, of warning us to never run away and join the circus or hop on a freight train? Was this your way of keeping us on the straight and narrow????
Thanks to my Dad, Alex T., my seestor, and good friend Candi, I've reached my first goal of raising $100 for UNICEF! That means I definitely have to wear a costume on the subway Wednesday morning. I've narrowed it down to three options: the crazy cat lady, complete with frumpy sweater, slippers, curlers and cats crawling up my back; the business exec who doesn't know there is a family of spiders on her back (partially just an excuse to wear a suit again); and dressing as me in 1987, since I actually still have my acid wash jean jacket, and can hairspray my bangs straight in the air. Help me choose - Exercise your right to vote!
Well, now that the UNICEF Halloween campaign is in full swing, I've decided to take on a personal fundraising challenge myself - the UNICEF Dare-to-Wear Challenge. Basically, I set a fundraising goal, and if my friends and family help me reach that goal, they get to pick what I'll wear on Halloween. Now, for most people, this would mean going to the office in their costume, but I work from home, soooo, what? In order to make this dare meaningful, I've agreed to help hand out candy and collect donations for UNICEF during morning rush hour on Halloween at the Dundas subway station. So you better believe I am going to be seen. Any Toronto Voxers out there, I'd love to have you stop by, and for a small donation, I'll let you take a photo with me to put on your Vox. It will be well worth your trouble. And plus, I'd just love to meet you!
I have set a personal goal of $200. If you help me raise $100, I'll wear a costume on Halloween. If you help me raise $200, and your donation is the largest, then you get to pick my costume.
So, if you would like to make a donation, send me a private message, and I'll send you a link to my pledge page.
And for everyone else, I need ideas for a tasteful Halloween costume that won't break the bank - any ideas???
