Hey, remember back in June when I said I couldn't stop listening to K'naan's new CD, Troubadour? Well, you are going to hear a whole lot more of one of the singles I mentioned, Waving Flag, because it is going to be remixed as the anthem for the 2010 World Cup of Soccer! Ya for K'naan!!!! It sounds like they are going to be re-writing the words, to make it more "uplifting", since the lyrics are pretty bleak, but either way, it is such an awesome song. I am so excited to hear it all over the World Cup next summer. Well, except as the theme song for Coca Cola ads, but I'll overlook that.
I've been having a pretty mixed week, both positives and negatives, but with the dropping temperatures and the first snow getting ready to fall, I've mostly just been in a funk. I just turned on the radio, and Wintersleep's "Weighty Ghost" was playing, and it was the perfect song to fit my mood:
I can't wait for the new Killers album to be released, if the first single, "Human", is any indication. It just reminds me of the Brit Pop I listened to in the late 80s/early 90s. Open their homepage, and it will start playing: http://www.thekillersmusic.com/
I was just listening to the CBC, not sure which show, but they were talking about the best cover songs ever, and their top choice was Youssou N'dour covering Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom." Just thought I'd share, since it really is awesome, awesome, awesome.
I've had this stuck in my head ever since my husband played it for me a few days ago. For all of you out there annoyed by voice distortion in hip hop...

I've always been fascinated by the following lyrics from "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks:
The clouds never expect it when it rains
But the sea changes colour
But the sea does not change
Was Stevie Nicks a zen master? What does this mean?
Show us your favorite album cover.
Rather than posting a pic of my favourite album cover, I'll post a link to it, since it involves nudity, and I don't want to offend anyone, particularly family members. It is the cover for The Beauty of Wynona, Daniel Lanois' 1993 album. It is a photo by Czech photographer, Jan Saudek, who is known for his hand-tinted, semi-erotic photographs. (Another one of his photos appeared on the cover of Soul Asylum's Grave Dancers Union). The reason this is my favourite cover is because of its ambiguity of gender, emotion, and intention. I love the cold, steeliness of it, the pose that is obviously threatening, the mix of weakness and strength. I think this picture just generally makes me nervous and uncomfortable, and for that it is unforgettable.
My younger sister introduced me to Kenna over Christmas, and I can't stop listening to this song. The influence of the Neptunes is very obvious, and Kenna bears a striking resemblance to Pharrell, but this song is still original enough to hold its own. I still need to get his new album, Make Sure they See My Face, and will let you know what I think. But so far, every review I've read has given it very high ratings, and has placed it in the electronica/house genre. Give it a listen:
I'm just back from dropping my mom off at the airport, and it is only 7am. The huz is asleep in the living room with lil'rere, who is having a terrible time with some sharp little snaggle teeth coming thru, and he seems only able to settle down with one of us in close proximity. What better time than this to Vox! Just want to share some music I received for Christmas:
I actually bought Sawdust, the Killers latest CD, for my younger sister, but she already had it, so I got to keep it. It is a compilation of remixes and covers, and thus is likely more an album for those who are already fans of the Killers. So far I am very much enjoying it, given its built in familiarity, but also because they have covered Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet", one of my most favourite songs ever. I'm not sure, however, if I am grateful for the earworm, since they have also covered "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and the chug, chug-a-chug, chug-a-chug, chug-a-chug has laid tracks thru my brain.
And courtesy of my other sister, I also received another CD that is in high rotation around here (are you listening Stuart?), Lullaby Renditions of The Cure. This is a really lovely instrumental CD of 11 songs by The Cure. It is produced by Baby Rock Records, who has also produced lullaby CDs covering Metallica, Coldplay, Radiohead, Tool, and Queens of the Stone Age, among others. I guess someone figured out that metalheads and goths grew up and bred as well. Yes friends, it has been 20 years since I found Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me under the Christmas tree, and breathed a sigh of relief that Santa hadn't taken the time to read the parental warning on the tape cover.....

Well, it may not be my favourite yet, but I'm enjoying listening to Jars of Clay's version of O Little Town of Bethlehem:
No kidding, I first heard it on a free CD I got at Canadian Tire while buying new Christmas tree lights, and liked it so much (reminded me of early Lightning Seeds), I downloaded their full Christmas album. See, giving music away for free does make people buy more of it!
